Digital badges and micro-credentials promise portable, instantly verifiable proof of specific skills. Used well they add checkable detail to an application; used carelessly they clutter it with noise. The difference lies in understanding what a badge actually verifies, and what it cannot.
What a digital badge is
A digital badge is a credential issued as a verifiable digital object rather than a paper certificate. A well-implemented badge carries embedded metadata: who issued it, to whom, when, for what achievement, against what criteria, sometimes with links to the evidence assessed.
